Aufzugswerke Schmitt + Sohn, or simply known as Schmitt + Sohn (stylised as S+), is a German elevator manufacturer based in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany. A family-owned company which has been in existence since 1861, it specializes in manufacturing of elevators and their components, as well as providing elevator maintenance, repairs and modernization. Along Lutz, it is one of the largest independent elevator manufacturers in Germany, and has operations in three additional European countries. Today, the company is run by the sixth generation of the Schmitt family.

The company was founded in 1861 by Martin Schmitt in Nuremberg, Germany and started out as a construction fitting company. It did not began making elevators until 1885 when the company began constructing its first elevator system, followed by development its own elevator in the very early 1900s. In 1918, the company was renamed to Aufzugewerke M. Schmitt & Sohn. In 1945 just after the end of World War II, the company was succeeded by Gerhart and Karl Schmitt. In 1952, Schmitt + Sohn produced its first escalator. The 1960s marked the company's first international expansion when a branch in Portugal was established in 1963 (although the company claims that was exporting elevators in the mid-war years to Finland, Norway, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Turkey and Czechoslovakia[1]). Schmitt + Sohn began using electronic control systems for elevators in 1971. In 2000, the company launched its own machine room less elevator.

Schmitt + Sohn is based in Nuremberg, the second largest city in the state of Bavaria, Germany. Domestically, the company has branches in several cities within Germany such as Berlin, Dresden, Essen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and many more. At one time just before the Fall of Berlin Wall and the German reunification, Schmitt + Sohn established a branch in East Germany.
It also has three branches within Europe, they are Austria, Portugal (established in 1963) and Czech Republic. Both the Austrian and Czech branch were established in 1989.
