This page discusses about the high-rise elevator models made by Mitsubishi Electric during the 1980s and 1990s. These models have most likely been superseded by the Mitsubishi GPM series introduced in 1993.

SMHL and SMNL[]

SMHL and SMNL were believed to be introduced by Mitsubishi likely around 1981, and discontinued around 1996, most likely as the successors to the TFHL/TFNL models. Like with the TFHL/TFNL, it is possible SMNL is a high-rise variant of SMHL.

Not much information is known about these elevators. These elevator models switched from Ward-Leonard and relay logic control to thyristor and microprocessor control[1], namely GL SMH / GL SMN[2] (SMHL/SMNL, respectively[3]). Also the group control system has been upgraded to the OS-2100C[4] group control system.

Both models were most likely succeeded by Mitsubishi's TCLM and MP-VF models.

MP-VF[]

The MP-VF, based on the Elepet Advance V, is a medium/high speed custom-type model of elevator designed for high-rise buildings. It was introduced in 1985 alongside its low-/mid-rise brother, the SP-VF, and had been produced until 1998.

Known specifications[]

  • AC gearless motor controlled by variable-voltage variable-frequency (VVVF) drive
  • Microprocessor control (VFMW/VFMWA/VFHW/VFHWA) with OS-2100C group control system (possibly AI-2100 in later (1990s-) models, though unconfirmed[5]).
    • Low-rise MP-VFs (presumably with speeds < 2 m/s) most likely use AC geared VVVF and VFCL controller like with the SP-VF.
  • Possibly up to 4 elevators in a group
  • Rated capacities from 750-1600 kg (or 10-24 persons).
  • Rated speeds: 0.75 / 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 metres per second

Other features[]

  • Mitsubishi Emergency Landing Device (MELD) (optional - the presence of MELD is indicated by a sign in the car, usually above the car station or on the transom above the door.)
  • Center opening or two-speed telescopic sliding door.
  • Mechanical arrival bell (standard) or electronic arrival chime.
  • Variable door timer
  • Economy mode: turns the lights and fan off after a period of time when idling
  • Change destination: When the doors unable to fully open for a period of time, the doors close and go to another floor according to the floor selected in the COP or LOP.
  • False call cancelling: Cancel all selected floors when the elevator detect the selected floors is more than the amount of passengers.
  • Up/Down peak mode (optional)
  • Anti-crime protection mode (optional)
  • Lunchtime mode (optional)
  • Hall call prediction (optional feature, applicable for OS-2100C / AI-2100N only)

TCLM[]

The TCLM is an high-speed computer-controlled elevator model made by Mitsubishi Electric from 1985 to circa 1997. It is a successor of the high-speed SMHL and SMNL models.

Not much information is known about this elevator model. It is believed to use a DC gearless motor with thyristor speed control, like its predecessor TFNL; with the GL TLCM/GL TLCH controller.

Known specifications[]

  • Microprocessor control (Mitsubishi GL TLCM/GL TLCH) with OS-2100C group control system[15] (possibly AI-2100 as an option in later (1990s-) models, though unconfirmed[5]).
  • Rated speeds (unconfirmed): 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 / 5 / 6 metres per second

Fixtures[]

SMHL / SMNL[]

These elevators used the same fixtures as used on the Mitsubishi "SP-III" (Elepet Advance) elevators.

MP-VF / TCLM[]

Standard[]

These fixtures are the similar to those on the SP-VF except that the car station is mounted on the front return panel as opposed to at an angle between the front and side panels.

Also, the floor indicator is mounted on the transom panel above the door. The indicator is also an 8-segment display (as opposed to 16 on the SP-VF), and has an option to display 3 characters, though by default a 2-digit indicator is supplied.

A wheelchair-height button panel is also available - it uses the same buttons as the regular car station and has an analog position indicator consisting of small illuminating lights.

"Otis Series 1-style" fixtures[]

These fixtures are relatively less common and are believed to mostly be found on TCLM elevators, though some MP-VFs have been spotted using these fixtures as well[10].

These fixtures have a car station with an angled floor indicator display (sometimes flat as well, though very rare); similar to what the Otis Series 1 fixtures had on the Elevonic 401 elevators. The digital 8-segmented indicators can show 2 or 3 digits.

As well as that, a VFD-based (vacuum-fluorescent display) information display below the floor indicator shows the date and time and any custom messages as well. This is most likely an optional feature, as elevators do exist using these fixtures but without the VFD information display[10].

The floor buttons are the same as used on the standard-style fixtures, brown buttons with Univers typeface and orange illumination. In most cases, the buttons are arranged in a row of three.

American-style fixtures[]

These fixtures are similar to those used in American 80s and 90s Mitsubishi elevators. They have square brown buttons with an orange square illumination in the center, as well as a braille plate beside the buttons.

These fixtures are a rarity in Asian countries.

Hall lanterns[]

The hall lanterns used are the same as those on the SP-VF — triangle-shaped lanterns that light up white. Some elevators have rounded lanterns or a combination of hall lanterns and digital position indicators (generally found on the main floor). Analog floor indicators are very rare.

Trivia and additional information[]

  • The GoldStar (or LG) VFMW model is a license rebadging of the Mitsubishi MP-VF[22][23]. Like in the case of the GoldStar VP-L (a rebadged SP-VF), this also arose out of the technical partnership between Mitsubishi and GoldStar and was most likely sold only in the domestic Korean market[24].
  • The manufacture of the spare components inside the Mitsubishi VFMW/VFMWA/VFHW/VFHWA controllers (used in high-rise MP-VFs and TCLM) will be discontinued in 2027, and the traction machine has already discontinued in April 2023[25].
  • The manufacture of the spare components (printed circuit boards, relays, transformers (for low voltage circuits)) inside the Mitsubishi VFCL controller (used in SP-VFs and low-rise MP-VFs) will be discontinued in 2027[26].

AI-2100 is shown as the successor of the OS-2100C group control system (see page 3), as such it is assumed later models might have it as an option. This is however mere speculation and should not be taken as a hard fact.
