The Gate switch is a switch that detects if the elevator's car door is closed.
By law, door interlocks likely are required to have at least two levels of redundancy (there is likely normally more than one set of electrical contacts in the gate switch), so that a single electrical short circuit cannot result in the gate switch being defeated and the hoist machine being allowed to start with the doors open.
