GAL (GAL Manufacturing Corp.) is a company that manufactures elevator fixtures, elevator door equipment and elevator controllers. GAL was established in 1927, and GAL stands for the last names of the founders, Herbert Glaser, Jack Abramowitz, and Harold Leon.
History
GAL was founded in 1927 by Herbert Glaser, Jack Abramowitz, and Harold Leon as G.A.L. Electromechanical Services. In 1960, GAL acquired Hollister-Whitney and changed name to GAL Manufacturing Corp. GAL acquired Elevator Components Inc. (ECI) in 2005. In 2017, GAL was acquired by Golden Gate Capital, a San Francisco based private equity firm.
In September 2018, GAL along with five other elevator parts companies (GAL Canada, Hollister-Whitney, Courion, Bore-Max and Elevator Controls) formed Vantage Elevator Solutions[1][2].
Elevator fixtures
- Further information: List of GAL elevator fixtures.
GAL is notable for manufacturing its elevator fixtures, from vandal resistant to ultra custom looks variations demanded by the most high-end elevators. GAL only manufactures two fixture product lines: the JET PLUS, now known as the Jet II, and B-Series. Their fixtures are also provided on some Otis elevators throughout the late 1970s and in the early 1980s.
As of May 2020, GAL is no longer selling their own fixtures for new orders, so that means the Jet II and B-Series fixtures have been discontinued. They now have a partnership with MAD Elevator, the North American division of DMG S.p.A of Italy, to distribute their fixtures through Vantage Elevator Solutions. They are still selling replacement parts though.
Trivia
- One of the older 1980s Fujitec elevator fixtures resemble the GAL's Jet Plus fixtures.
- Since the acquisition in 1960, GAL has partnered with Hollister-Whitney to sell traction machines with their controller equipment.
- GAL also supplies controllers, door interlock devices and door operators.
- GAL has also supplied Otis with the "New Lexan" button design. This was basically a modified version of the Jet-Plus button that had a black button and clear halo, which Otis then used on their elevators from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.
