Hall call prediction is a feature on some elevators where the car to be allocated to a particular hall call is predicted by the group control system and indicated on the respective hall lantern. This feature is generally used in large elevator banks, usually of 4 or more elevators.
This feature gives passengers ample time to proceed to the elevator car assigned to them[1], especially in elevator lobbies that are unusually large or if passengers are carrying luggage or other goods[1].
Overview[]
When a hall call is made, the group control system (elevator algorithm) predicts which car is allocated to that particular hall call. This allocated car is then indicated by the respective hall lantern (up/down), generally along with an aural chime. When the car arrives, the hall lantern blinks, as well as an aural chime sounds, to indicate its arrival.
Even though it behaves kind of like a destination dispatch system, it is not to be confused with it. Instead of instead of allocating cars on the basis of destination, hall call prediction indicates in advance which car has been allocated to respond to the hall call. That said, elevators with a "hybrid" destination dispatch (where the selection keypad is installed only on the main floors) often use hall call prediction on floors which don't have a selection keypad (i.e., floors with regular up/down hall stations).
Applications[]
Mitsubishi[]
Mitsubishi elevators (generally large banks, normally in high-rise settings) often come with hall call prediction (Mitsubishi calls this feature Immediate Prediction Indication - AIL[1][2]). Mitsubishi elevators using OS-2100C[3] , AI-2100[N][4], ΣAI-2200[5] and ΣAI-2200C[1][2] group control systems, which are applicable for banks of 3 elevators and more[6], can have AIL as an optional feature.

Other manufacturers[]
Other elevator manufacturers also have hall call prediction as a feature on their elevators; including Fujitec, Hitachi[7], Hyundai and Sigma / LG[8][9][10].
Second car prediction[]
If the elevator car allocated by the group control system cannot accommodate the hall traffic of a particular floor (determined by elevator capacity), a second car is allocated to that particular floor. The hall lantern of the second elevator car lights up indicating the additional car allocated for the additional floor traffic.
Mitsubishi calls this feature Second Car Prediction - TCP[6], and is available as an optional feature as well for Mitsubishi elevators using the ΣAI-2200C[6] (and retroactively ΣAI-2200[5] as well as AI-2100N[4]) group control system(s); though it is possible other elevator manufacturers might have a similar feature option as well.
Trivia and additional information[]
- AIL, Mitsubishi's feature code for hall call prediction could be an abbreviation for Arrival Indicator Light.
