Elevator emergency automatic rescue device (also known as ARD for automatic rescue device) is a special device installed in an elevator which is only used during an event of a power failure or blackout in a building. An elevator emergency landing device is useful for preventing passengers from becoming trapped inside an elevator during a power failure. All newly-installed elevators must have elevator emergency automatic rescue device implemented before an elevator examination can pass. However, some countries may not require this device.

How it works

Please refer to Emergency power operation (EPR).

Upon power failure, an elevator equipped with this device automatically moves and stops at the nearest floor using a rechargeable battery (or uninterruptible power supply also known as a UPS), and the doors will then open to ensure any onboard passengers' safety[1][2].

Voice messages when automatic rescue device is operating

  • "自動拯救裝置運行中,請耐心等候升降機前往靠近的樓層 (Cantonese), 自動拯救裝置運行中,請耐心等候升降機前往靠近的樓層 (Putunghua), Automatic rescue device is operating, please be patient while the lift move to near landing floor (English)" - Applied for some of the Toshiba elevators in Hong Kong or Macau.
