Elevator Wiki

Abusing an elevator may have many factors of cause. They most commonly include carelessness.

Abuse may also lead to elevator incidents or more seriously, accidents. They can be many things, including:

  • Using the elevator for what it wasn't designed for.
  • Vandalizing the door interlocks so the elevator doors fail where people can get hurt.
  • "Elevator surfing"
  • Vandalizing the fixtures so people can't use them.
  • Jumping in the elevator if it's an old (or generic) elevator.
  • Ringing the bell for no reason or just to fool the guards/security.
  • Overloading the elevator by inviting people so they exceed the maximum number of persons/kilograms/pounds.
  • Overloading the elevator by placing heavy objects in the elevator (like refrigerators or furniture) so the elevator cannot be used.
  • Messing around with wiring in the box/elevator panel (if it's unlocked).
  • Pulling the elevator's emergency stop switch or using a key on the stop switch in a non-emergency.
  • Holding the doors of an elevator using the door hold button in an attempt to deny elevator service to others.
  • Pushing many or all the buttons and then getting out to slow other people down.
  • Using an elevator key that controls the fan/light and switching them off.
  • Doing harmful pranks that will get passengers stuck in between floors.
  • Knocking on the door while the elevator is running.
  • Using the intercom or phone for no good purpose like chatting with the officer.
  • Vandalizing the security camera installed in the elevator.
  • Hacking the key card scanner in the elevator (usually can be found at hotels/apartments).
  • Smoking in the elevator, since it may burn the elevator, set off the smoke detectors (fire mode), or cause a fire.
  • Transporting heaving things with a cart to a non-freight elevator.
  • Writing rude comments on the wall in pen or spray paint.
  • "Yanking" out button(s).
  • Removing parts (eg: buttons).
  • Deliberately closing the elevator doors on people.
  • Smashing or scratching the glass (in glass elevators).
  • Leaving the door open by placing an object in the bumper tracks.
  • Obstructing the doors repeatly.
  • Disabling the button(s).
  • Switching the elevator to other operation modes (with key or control panel switches, if it's unlocked).
  • Using the elevator as a toilet.
  • Filming a dirty video in the elevator.
  • Forcing the doors open when the elevator is in motion.
  • Entering more than 1 destination in destination dispatch elevators.
  • Farting and stinking the car out!
  • Using pet mode without a pet.
  • Removing the safety tab.
  • Placing paper or cardboard on the door tracks to jam the doors (this results in the doors getting out of alignment and an incident in Singapore happened because of this misuse by construction workers).
  • Getting substances into elevators.
  • Leaving the elevators out of service by nudging them.
  • Place small objects on elevator doors so that the doors can't close properly.

Some of the abuses are often caused by vandalism.
